Between 1996 and 2002, more than 175 children died
of heatstroke in the passenger compartment of parked vehicles
in the U.S. When the outside temperature is 93F, the temperature
inside a car can reach 125F in 20 minutes, even with the windows
cracked. When left in a hot vehicle, a young child's core body
temperature can increase three to five times faster than that
of an adult, causing permanent injury or death. Many parents leave
their children in the car, thinking that they will return
shortly.
BabyOnBoard is a wireless temperature monitor and key chain alarm
system for parents to alert them of potentially dangerous conditions
in the car. This is an aftermarket product that can be used with
any child car seat and car. This battery-operated system has two
main components: (1) a car seat unit and (2) key chain unit. The
car seat unit contains a force sensor which is placed on the baby
seat. It also contains a sensor which continually monitors the
air temperature in the car while there is a child in the seat.
If the temperature exceeds the threshold, the unit will send a
wireless message to the key chain unit, which will sound an alarm
to alert the parent. |
