Pros / Cons:
Advantages:
- The turning process
is very flexible.
- It is often used to
improve surface texture. However, it should be noted that the
surface and dimensional accuracy depend on factors such as the
characteristics and condition of the machine tool, stiffness,
vibration and chatter, process parameters, tool geometry and wear,
cutting fluids, and machinability of the workpiece material.
- Operation cost can
be very modest given general-purpose equipment and cutters are
used.
- For mass production,
special-purpose machines are used. They may cost millions of dollars
but the cost is justifiable when handling labor is virtually eliminated
and machining accuracy and repeatability are ensured.
Disadvantages:
- It is more costly
than casting, cold forming, extrusion, etc., if these processes
can provide the surface finish, and dimensional accuracy required
for the part. This is clear as the stocks used in turning are
usually produced by one of the above mentioned processes.
