Material Use

Metals, both ferrous and nonferrous, plastics, and other organic materials have been used.

The starting workpiece is usually the product of other processes, such as casting, shaping, forging, extrusion, and drawing.

Machinability is an important factor in the cost of turned products. Products made of materials with high machinability cost less even when if the bulk materials are more expensive.

Following is a list of materials and their machinability ranking.

Material Ranking
Cast Iron 80
Carbon Steel 80
Alloy Steel 50
Stainless Steel 50
Aluminum & Alloys 100
Copper & Alloys 100
Zinc & Alloys 80
Magnesium & Alloys 80
Titanium & Alloys 50
Nickel & Alloys 50
Refractory Metals 50
Thermoplastics 50
Thermosets 50
Ceramics 0
PhotoPolymers 0
Wood (dry) 80

A value of zero means that the corresponding material is never used with this process, a ranking of 100 means that it is excellent for use with this process.
