Design Recommendations
- If possible, use
a bar stock having the same diameter as the largest diameter
of the component to be produced. This conserves material and
reduces machining. Also, use standard sizes and shapes of bar
stock.
- It is always advisable
to keep the design as simple as possible. The fewer the tool
stations required and the fewer the characteristics to be machined,
the lower is the cost of the part in the long run.
- Use standard tools
as much as possible. The designer is advised to specify standard,
common sizes for holes, slots, knurls, screw threads, etc.,
and incorporate standard tool geometry at diameter transitions,
exterior shoulders, grooves, and chamfer areas.
- Avoid secondary
operations as much as possible. They increase the cost of the
product.
- The parting lines,
draft angles, and forging flash must be excluded from surfaces
used in the clamping or locating of the part.
