Pros / Cons

Advantages:

  • Reduces fixtures and tooling costs.
  • Capable of machining exotic materials, including materials that are harder than typical tool materials.
  • Can machine hardened materials, thus eliminating the need for post-machining heat treatment.
  • Produces parts with high accuracy and excellent surface finish.
  • Can produce complex, intricate shapes.

Disadvantages:

  • The surface has a heat affected zone. In heat treatable material, this layer is very hard. If high amperage is used, minutes cracks can appear leading to premature fatigue failure.
