Material Use

The EDM process is suitable for materials that are electrical conductors, including metals and nonmetals. In addition to traditional materials used in machining processes, EDM has the capability to machine exotic materials: A-286, superalloys, medical grade stainless, titanium, Hastealloy, niobium, tungsten, aluminum alloys, copper, etc.

Following is a table of materials and their ranking. The ranking indicates the material suitability for the EDM process.

Material Ranking
Cast Iron 100
Carbon Steel 100
Alloy Steel 100
Stainless Steel 100
Aluminum & Alloys 100
Copper & Alloys 100
Zinc & Alloys 100
Magnesium & Alloys 100
Titanium & Alloys 100
Nickel & Alloys 100
Refractory Metals 100
Thermoplastics 0
Thermosets 0
Ceramics 0
PhotoPolymers 0
Wood (dry) 0

A value of zero means that the corresponding material is never used with this process, a ranking of 100 means that it is excellent for use with this process.
