Pros / Cons

Advantages:

  • Quick generation of models: parts are produced within minutes to a few hours.

  • Accurate models: accurate to within 0.005 in.

  • Limited design restrictions: can produce any valid solid shape that can be designed on a CAD application.

  • Automatic scaling: accurately scales part to fit inside machine production space.

  • Easy to use: the whole process is computer controlled.

  • Quick change of material, if a different material is needed.

  • Clean process: no waste of material during or after producing the model.

  • No worry of possible exposure to toxic chemicals, lasers, or a liquid polymer bath.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited material: works only with a few plastics and ceramics.

  • Limited size: size can not always be as large as needed.

  • Cost of actual machine: inital investment for machinery is expensive.
