Material Use

Limited number of materials can be used in the FDM process. The material should have a melting point between 180 and 220 degrees Fahranheit and must be moldable by the machine.

The majority of available systems use thermoplastic materials:

  • ABS, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, plastics.
  • Investment Casting Waxirconia.
  • Alumina.
  • Chopped carbon-fiber reinforced PolyEtherEtherketone (PEEK).
  • MABS, Methyl Methracrylate ABS, plastics.

In general, the FDM process produces parts that have approximately 80% the strength of the same material produced by injection molding.
